Situated on the Loire river in the west of France, Nantes has historically been one of the most important cities in the Brittany region.  Renowned for it's beautiful churches and wide array of museums, Nantes is also famous for it's fresh seafood cuisine and delectable wines.  Within the town, the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany, the Basilica of Saint Louis, the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the Jules Verne Museum and the Passage Pommeraye are popular amongst tourists; whilst further afield lie Guérande, Clisson and Le Croisic, all regarded as must-see towns typical of the surrounding Pays de la Loire region.  Nantes is connected to Angers in the east by the A11, Saint Nazaire in the west on the N171, and Rennes in the north on the E03.

Nantes is serviced by Nantes Atlantique Airport, located seven kilometres to the south-west of Nantes near the small town of Le Champsiome.  One of the busiest airports in western France, the complex is visited by Ryan Air (from Bournemouth, East Midlands, Dublin, London, Liverpool and Shannon), Aer Arann (Manchester, Cardiff and Cork), and Easy Jet (London and Geneva) amongst others.  Car hire, which is recommended for exploring the surrounding region, is available at the dedicated car rental building outside of the main terminal.  Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Sixt and National Citer are based at the airport.  The summer months can be particularly warm in Nantes, with averages hovering around 25°C, so it is advisable to rent air-conditioned vehicles if you will be visiting in June, July or August.
